Helen Jelly
​Women's 2nd Team Head Coach
Helen Jelly is an accomplished hockey player and coach with a distinguished career spanning both domestic and international competition. She grew up playing at Leicester Hockey Club, where she was part of the team that won the Premier Indoor and Outdoor Leagues, as well as the European Champions Challenge. She also represented the club in the EuroHockey Club Champions Cup twice. Following her time at Leicester, she joined Beeston Hockey Club, where she played a key role in their Division 2 Indoor title win and was the top goal scorer.
Her playing career continued at the university level, where she studied at UWIC (Cardiff Metropolitan University) and played for Swansea in European competitions. This year, she was awarded the prestigious title of top goal scorer in Europe. Additionally, she spent a season playing in Australia for Queensland University, Beeston HC, and Guildford HC, further expanding her international experience. She also represented Wales U21s on the international stage, demonstrating her commitment to the sport at the highest levels.
In coaching,
Helen has had an equally successful and varied career. In 2011, she was awarded England Hockey’s Club Coach of the Year, becoming the youngest and only female coach at the Junior National Finals. She has coached numerous youth teams through the player pathway, winning the Futures Cup five times with a mixture of boys' and girls' teams. Her adult coaching experience includes roles with Leicester Ladies 2s, Westleigh Men’s, Beeston Men’s, and Winchester Ladies. She spent five years coaching the Army Ladies, where she led the team to numerous indoor and outdoor inter-service titles, as well as England Hockey Tier 3 titles, and helped them achieve Army Sports Team of the Year.
In addition to her work with club teams, Helen has coached at the junior level, including three years with Leicester U18s and U16s, during which the teams reached the National Finals in two of those years. She also coached Beeston U16s to National Final appearances in both Indoor and Outdoor competitions. In her school coaching roles, she has served as Head of Hockey at Welbeck DSFC, Tormead School, and currently at Notre Dame School in Cobham.
Her extensive coaching career also includes serving as the Assistant Coach for the England U16 Girls team in 2022. This role further cemented her reputation as one of the leading coaches in the country. Helen's commitment to professional development is reflected in her completion of the FIH Level 4 qualification and the European Hockey Federation Top Coaches Programme, where she was the only female in her cohort.
