JIMMY CULNANE 

DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY

Jimmy originally joined the Wimbledon Club as Director of Junior Hockey at the beginning of the 22/23 season and moved to the director of hockey role in November 22. He has already worn numerous coaching hats for the club including helping our Mens’ 2nd XI get promoted to and sustain national league competition. He has coached our U12s over the last couple of years supporting the boys to London Performance league success and the girls to the London regional final last year. He now supports the coaching of both our men’s and women’s performance groups whilst directing all on-pitch activity at the club.

Jimmy is also currently working with Scottish Hockey who he has been supporting since June 2023. He is assistant coach with the Scotland senior womens’ team whilst head coaching the Scotland U21. Most recently these teams won both the EuroHockey A division qualifiers and the EuroHockey Junior B division to retain A division status for both groups and qualify for the Junior World Cup. Before the Scotland role he worked with the England U16 Boys as Head Coach from November ‘20 until December ‘23 and the England U18 Boys as assistant from September 2018 before taking the U16 position. Highlights in these roles include winning a U16 4 Nations in 2023 and a bronze at the U18 8 Nations in 2019. Jimmy has also held various roles in the pathway including Performance Centre Head Coach, Junior Regional Performance Centre Head Coach and Director of County Hockey. He now has a fairly unique CV in pathway hockey as someone who has worked in every rung on the ladder from county JDC to Senior International.

Before Wimbledon, Jimmy spent ten years as Head of Hockey at Surbiton High helping cement them as one of the top hockey schools in the country winning multiple national titles and supporting multiple juniors to England Junior, National League and US Collegiate level. Alongside this Jimmy worked at Surbiton Hockey Club assisting the men’s program to Premier League titles in 16-17, 17-18 and 19-20, indoor titles in 16-17 and 19-20 and Euro Hockey League bronze in 2022. He coached the U16 and U18 boys’ teams during that time to national titles in 15-16 and 16-17.

 

Jimmy holds a master’s in performance coaching from the University of Stirling and is one of the country’s only FIH level 5 qualified coaches. He is a graduate of the EuroHockey Top Coach program, the Great Britain Advanced Coaches Program and an FIH educator.
